Sprinkles, Sugar and Santa
"Daddy, daddy," Two little voices exclaimed as they barreled through the kitchen door and into the living room.
"Mommy tried to make cookies," Noah started, excitedly.
"And they caught on fire," Nicholas added, "There was flames and everything."
"We had to get the fire tingusher," Noah threw in nodding for effect.
"We didn't get burned. Then Coral had to make new ones, and she made cupcakes too," Nicholas continued, "Mommy is letting us decorate them."
David nodded through an amused laugh, taking in the sight of his little guys. They were caked in icing, what looked like powdered sugar and Noah looked like he was spotted with cinnamon or nutmeg. They'd clearly had as much success decorating as Erica had baking the cookies. "I see that," He laughed, leaning down so that he was eye level to his little guys, "Did you save some for me?"
They nodded vehemently, "Come on, daddy. We have to finish before Santa comes tonight." They told him, reaching for his hands.
He laughed, shaking his head as he shrugged out of his jacket and laying it on the couch before letting his guys lead him into the kitchen.
"Mommy," Nicholas said, as he pushed open the kitchen door, "daddy's home."
"Only for you and your brothers would I go through this," Erica smiled to Bella, who was laughing happily from her high chair, which they'd set near the counter so she'd think she was helping them make cookies, her eyes locked on her mommy as she chewed on a Christmas cookie.
Erica was standing behind the kitchen counter, her hair swept up in loose tendrils. She was dressed in one of his t-shirts, which was speckled with the same icing and sugar smudges that his boys were painted in. He even noted her lack of make up, and the soft haze of sugar on her cheeks and what he figured was dried icing in her hair.
She looked absolutely beautiful.
Erica looked at him, offering him an exhausted and enchanting smile, "Don't you laugh at me too," She told him, watching him smile adoringly at her.
"Never," He laughed, starting around the corner of the counter. He dropped a kiss on Bella's forehead as he made his way toward Erica, "You look beautiful."
She scoffed shaking her head at him, "Hardly," She said, turning to her left so that she was facing him, a playful smile tilting her lips.
"Looks like you had a productive day," He teased, his voice filled with love as he looked down at her.
"Before or after I almost burnt down the house?" She asked, tossing him a raised eyebrow, as she shook her head.
He nodded, stepping closer so he could slide his arms around her waist, "Both," He told her, "You've never baked before, I'd say you did good, fire or not."
She smiled up at him, nodding, "I get points for trying."
"Of course," He nodded, "The icing in your hair is a cute touch," He told her, leaning in to steal her lips before she could reply.
"Ewww, no kissing," Nicholas interrupted, "We have to finish the cookies and cupcakes before Santa comes."
"I wants to make Santa a big, red and green cookie, mommy," Noah piped in, moving back to his chair so they could continue decorating.
David pulled away slowly, after he was sure Erica got his message that they'd have a private Christmas celebration later. He thumbed at her cheeks, brushing away the powdered sugar, "I think this look suits you," He teased, "I might request you be in the kitchen a lot more."
"Don't even think about it," She tossed back, offering them a playful slap on the chest before walking past him, stopping so she could scoop up and amused Bella and head back to the table.
" "mon daddy," Noah told him, motioning to the empty seat next to him.
Erica bounced Bella in her arms and slid into the chair between her guys, "Come on, David. We saved some for you."
He laughed, shaking his head at them while he rolled up his sleeves, "Alright, lets get these going. We have a dead line to meet."
"Careful, daddy," Nicholas told him, "it's messy."
"I can see that," He laughed, leaning down to tickle his little guys belly before joining his family at the table.
"Da da," Bella blew out through a bubbly laugh holding out her chubby left arm as she offered David her cookie, "cookde."
At almost a year old his little Princess was already speaking in two and three word sentences. Not that they were surprised, both boys were speaking in complete sentences by the time they were fifteen months old, learning to read by two, and beginning to write letters and their names by two. Bella was no exception. She was already saying, "ma ma" "da da", "'oah" for Noah and "ic" for Nicholas. She was even beginning to say words for everyday things. Thanks to her brothers, cookie was one of her current favorite words.
"Ewww, Bella you slobbered on dat," Noah said, making an "Ewww" sound.
"Thank you baby," David smiled, leaning down to take a bite of the soggy cookie before he sat down.
Bella giggled and then held the cookie up to her mommy's mouth.
"Will these cookies make Santa to fat to fit in the chimmey?" Noah wondered, as he scooped icing from the container onto his cookie.
David laughed and shook his head, "No, but all that icing isn't good for his blood pressure."
"Spoken like a true Cardiologist," Erica laughed, shaking her head at him as her boys continued to shovel icing and sprinkles on their confectionary delights. David would be eating these masterpieces tonight, while she arranged the presents.
"We could leave him some carrots too," Nicholas mused, shaking red and green sprinkles all over the cookie he was currently working on.
"Yeah, no high blood pressure," Noah nodded.
Erica tossed David a soft smile, loving the fact that her boys took their daddy's jabs at junk food with smiles.
"Exactly," David told them, working on this own cookie now, "Now lets get these finished, so we can read some stories, maybe watch a Christmas movie or two before bed."
"Rudolph," Noah said.
"Frosty," Nicholas countered.
"We have time for both if you hurry up," Erica told them. She'd let them stay up and watch both movies. She and David would read them The Night before Christmas, before they laid out cookies, milk and carrots, if that's what they wanted. She'd give these kids the Christmas' she and David had never had. She wanted to see their smiles. Hear their laughter. See those brown eyes of their eyes go wide with awe and wonder when they saw their presents under the tree.
"Hurry up," Nicholas said, jabbing Noah with his elbow.
"You hurried up," Noah shot back, sticking his tongue out.
Two hours later, they were all cleaned up and bathed, and ready to settle in for a Christmas Eve of movies and hot chocolate.
Erica settled Bella on the couch with her brothers, and had gone in to help David with the popcorn and hot chocolates and was currently peaking out the kitchen door, "David," She whispered, tipping her head out the door, "you have to see this."
He tossed her a confused nod, and set the mugs of hot chocolate on the counter, "What's going on?"
She tipped her head out the door, eyes locked on the boys and Bella who were sitting on the couch. Noah was cuddled in next to Nicholas, and Bella sat on his lap, babbling to her brothers as Nicholas read from…or pretended to read from The Night before Christmas.
"Can he read that?" David asked, his voice filled with awe as he watched the scene before him.
She shook her head, "I don't think it matters," She breathed, blinking back tears.
He took a step toward her, leaning in so he could slide his arms around her waist.
She tipped her head back against his chest, and his embrace tightened, "I don't want to interrupt."
"Don't," He breathed, lips hovering near her ear, "Moments like this are why we're here," He whispered, "Seven years ago, I was alone, bitter, and miserable. I didn't think I deserved any of this, and I certainly didn't want it," He started, his voice low and filled with love, "The thought of watching my children sitting together on a the couch, reading a story together on Christmas Eve was something I couldn't fathom," He acknowledged, "But now, standing here, with you in my arms watching them…I couldn't ask for anything more."
"I feel the same," She breathed through her tears as she leaned against him.
They fell silent, lost in the sound of Nicholas reading, "the children asleep in their bed, mommy and daddy in their hats, had just gone to sleep for a long winter nap;.." he read, doing his best to read the words and remember the words that his mommy and daddy had read to him every Christmas since he was a baby.
"Merry Christmas, Erica," David breathed, dropping a soft kiss on her cheek.
"Merry Christmas," She breathed back, her eyes drifting closed, as she said a silent thank to whoever it was that had granted her this gift. She still didn't quite believe this was all hers, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to enjoy every moment of it.
"Mommy," Noah's voice boomed, "we ready for da movie."
Erica turned her head a bit to the left, and cast David a smile, "Thank you," She breathed, leaning up to drop a quick kiss on his lips, "Make sure the hot chocolate is still hot," She laughed, as she pulled out of his arms and headed for her babies, "Hurry, we still have a party of our own that we need to get to," She told him, tossing him a wink.
He laughed aloud at that, and nodded. He wasn't sure when it happened, but Christmas had become one of the happiest days of his life.
The End
David wakes Erica with a kiss
