Part I
"But mommy, it's the beach. Let's go," Nicholas said, blowing the words into the glass door of their suite, as he focused out the widow.
"It's almost midnight, baby," Erica replied through a laugh, "We have a big few days ahead of us, you need to get to bed. " Not that she blamed him, this was the first time that he'd seen the ocean, at least the first time that he was old enough to remember seeing it, and the beaches of Rio were stunning and incredibly inviting.
"I want to go to the beach," He said again, the widow fogging from his breath, "Just for a little bit, please mommy?" He finished, turning his head toward her, his most adorable and irresistible smile on display.
She smiled back at him, shaking her head. How this child was not tired was beyond her. It was a long flight from Pine Valley to Rio, with a stop in Florida on the way, coupled with two potty breaks and run through the first hamburger stand they could find when they finally made into Rio; and both Nicholas and Noah were wide awake and brimming with excitement. "We'll go to the beach tomorrow, I promise."
"Lets go now," He tried again, flashing her an even brighter smile then before.
"Bedtime," She replied through her smile.
"I don't like bedtime," He pouted, shaking his head as he turned from the window, arms folded across his chest.
There was no question that he was his father's clone, but the expression he was wearing currently; was something he clearly got from her. Which made it useless against her, but extremely effective against his father, a fact Nicholas had yet to realize, however.
"Well," She told him, nodding as she threw back the blankets on the bed, "you don't have to like it. But you still have to have one."
"I know how to swim," He told her, hoping one last time that she'd relent, despite the fact that he'd already given up the fight and was headed for the bed.
"I know you do, baby," She said with a smile, "but that doesn't change the fact that it's late and it's dark out." They had a pool at home, and one of the first things she'd read when she was pregnant with Nicholas was that a pool shouldn't be painted as something bad and off limits for a child; a fact which would only lead them seek it out with more determination. Instead, exposing them to it as often as possible would teach them to respect the water and understand what it was and why they had to be careful around it. They started exposing each child to the water as soon as they could, and at five and nearly three both boys already knew how to swim to at least the side of the pool.
"Noah is still up," He whined, despite the fact he was climbing into the bed.
"Noah is brushing his teeth and then he'll be in," She told him through an amused smile as she pulled the covers over him, "If you want to go brush your teeth again, you can stay up a few more minutes."
He flashed her a less then amuses scowl and shook his head, "I want to go to the beach," He said again, shaking his head.
"In the morning," He heard his daddy's voice sound from the doorway, where he'd just emerged, Noah draped across his back.
"Sounds like you've been having the same discussion," Erica said laughing as she turned her eyes on her other two favorite men.
"Daddy saids its to late to swim," Noah told her, shaking his head as David walked him toward the bed.
"So did mommy," Nicholas told him, shaking his head a he flipped back the covers for his brother.
"It's good to know we agree," Erica laughed looking up at David, her eyes bright and burning with love. She loved these moments, the normal everyday moments, that others would take for granted. She'd never had these growing up; the endless, innocent pursuit of something, her parents saying no through amuse laughter as they tucked her in. She'd take this over a cover spread on the worlds most popular magazine, any day.
"Especially when we're getting tagged teamed," David laughed, moving so that he could tickle Noah as he slid down off his daddy's back.
"I's wants to build a sandcastle," Noah told them through as laughter as he crawled along the top of the bed, heading for the pillows so he could settle in next to his brother.
When they'd decided to move Noah into a big bed, they'd given Nicholas the choice as to whether he wanted his own room or to share one with Noah. He's surprised them both by choosing to share a room with his brother. It made sense now, seeing as they often ended up like this anyway, both asleep in the same bed, one twisted and tangled in the sheets the other pushed to the other side of the bed. They wouldn't have it any other way it seemed, neither making it through the night without ending up in the same room as his brother.
"Me too," Nicholas added, "A big one with a mote."
"Ands a fort," Noah said, both boys nodding enthusiastically, "Can we?"
David and Erica nodded, "Tomorrow," He told them with a wink.
They flashed him identical scowls, but nodded anyway, ready to give up the fight for the night. "Will you tell us a story?"
"That I can do," He told them, "What kind of story do you want to hear?"
The boys were silent for a few seconds as they thought through their decision; Nicholas leaned down to whisper something to Noah, who nodded and laughed, before leaning up to whisper something to Nicholas, "Tell us about the prince and princess who live in our sandcastle," Nicholas told him, watching Erica shoot David a curious eyebrow.
"The prince and princess who live in your sandcastle, huh," He said back to them, nodding as he moved up the bed, crawling over to right side next to Nicholas.
" 'mon mommy," Noah told her motioning to the side of the bed next to him.
She smiled back at him, and moved to slid in next to him. Bella was fast asleep in the next room and the door was wide open so they could hear her if she cried, so there was no harm in cuddling in close to her three favorite men. Besides, she wanted to see what David came up with.
"Alright boys," He told them, after Erica was settled in next to Noah, "this story starts a long time ago, in a far away land called Pine Valley…"
