This is set Mother's Day 2006, two months before the last fic. I just wanted write mothers day for Erica, since the show doesn't do it. I'll post the second part later, hope you like.
Part 1
"Daddy," Noah piped from the kitchen table, where he sat coloring furiously as he worked to finish the card he was making, "Today mommy's day?"
"Yes it is," David answered from across the kitchen, where he and Nicholas mixed and stirred pancake batter.
The sun was tripping up the east wall of their house on it's way to peer through the shudders of their second story bedroom window, when the boys had bounded into his and Erica's room, excited to get to work on their Mother's Day surprise. Normally he'd be upset that Erica had gotten to that point that she was so exhausted that she didn't stir at their sons enthusiastic pleads to go down stairs and compile their gifts, but today he'd merely kissed her forehead, pulled the covers over her and shooed the boys from the room.
It was just after 7:30AM now, and they were well on their way to finishing breakfast. He'd let the boys choose the menu, chocolate chip pancakes, an omelet….though adding the mushrooms was his idea, a fresh fruit salad and her favorite Green Tea. Of course he'd nudged the boys into the menu, but that didn't mean he wasn't proud of them for not suggesting their usual favorite meal…pizza.
"And we's gonna give mommy da card's?" Noah wondered as he reached across the table for one last crayon.
"Not if you don't finish that," David directed at Noah though his eyes were on Nicholas, who was attempting to shove another handful of chocolate chips into his mouth, "In the bowl, not your mouth," He tried to sound firm, but the sweet, wide eyed, innocence that Nick beamed back at him, shook his resolve.
Nicholas erupted in laughter, sending the few chocolate chips that had made it into his mouth, shooting across the table where they bounced before landing on the edge of the counter.
"Me want some," Noah chimed in through his own happy laughter.
"If either your have anymore sugar this early in the day, your mother is going to be very angry with me," He told him, eyes shifting between both boys, who were nodding vehemently.
"We like chocolate," Nicholas told him, "And so does mommy. She won't minds if we have some." He nodded, leaning forward to dip his hand into chocolate chip bag.
"Nice try," David laughed, his still faster hands allowing him to catch Nicholas's hand mid grasp. "We don't want mommy to be mad at us today, do we?" He asked them, knowing how his boys worked. They had no problem pushing and pleading for what they wanted, batting their eyes and melting hearts with their smiles, but when it came to their mother and making and keeping her happy, they'd be on their best behavior without a second thought.
"No," Both boys breathed shaking their heads. "We want mommy to have a happy day." Nicholas added, watching his daddy ladle out pancake mix onto the griddle.
"That's right," He told them, "We want everything to be perfect."
"Likes mommy," Noah replied, scribbling one last red point onto the paper.
"Exactly," He acknowledged, "Hurry up and finish so when the pancakes are done we can go surprise mommy."
"It's a heart and som' fowers," Noah said proudly, holding the card up as soon as he'd scribbled in one last blue line.
"It's beautiful," David told him, tipping his head toward the tray he'd started to prepare at the head of the counter, "Put it over there with Nick and Bella's."
"Mine's better," Nicholas tossed at his brother, who stuck his tongue out in return as he slid out of his chair and moved toward the counter.
"What this?" Noah wondered, pushing two boxes toward the back of the tray so that his card would fit.
"That's mommy's present," Nicholas told him, "You was sleeping when daddy and I wrapped it up."
"What's it?" He asked, fingering the perfectly tied bow on the top box.
"Remember when we went to see mommy's friend Harold and he took your pictures?" David asked, and Noah nodded vehemently, happy he remembered their trip to his mommy's office and the man who made them take pictures the whole day. "That's the pictures. Now mommy has a brand new one of each of you and all of you together."
"That's cause Bella wasn't born last mommy's day," Nicholas pointed out proudly.
"Right," David told them, flipping the two pancakes he'd been trying to keep an eye on, "And since mommy is going back to work, we wanted her to have brand new pictures to put on her desk."
She was going back to Enchantment for the first time since Nicholas was born. Not that she hadn't continued to work or had give up the reigns, she'd merely worked from home in posh office he'd had made for her on their anniversary. She missed the office, though, and they'd agreed that when Nicholas started Kindergarten in September she'd go back to work. Of course she'd take Noah and Bella with her, and leave them at the nursery a floor below her office, but it was still a return to the full reigns and no one could be more thrilled for her then he was.
"What are those flowers called?" Nicholas asked, his eyes moving from the pancakes to his brother who was still messing about the tray, trying to arrange his card perfectly.
"Orchids," David breathed, nodding in his son's direction despite the fact that he was transferring the pancakes from griddle to plate.
"They purple," Noah observed leaning in for a closer look, "They smell's pretty."
"Mommy likes Orchids?" Nicholas questioned.
"Yes she does," David told them, arranging the pancakes on the plate so that he could transfer the plate to the tray, "Noah, is your card ready, because these pancakes are." He asked of his son, who's little face was clenched and twisted as he still fiddled with where his card would stand on the tray.
"It not fit, daddy." Noah breathed shaking his head.
"Just put on it on there," Nicholas chimed in, pushing himself off the stool he'd been sitting on while he helped his daddy, "Mine first, then yours, then Bella's."
"Why you first?" Noah asked, narrowing his eyes at his brother.
"I'm the oldest," Nicholas replied with a knowing smile as he moved to the table to help his brother arrange the cards correctly.
David snickered at their bickering, amused at how even now there was sibling rivalry between his boys. They bickered and teased, fought over who was best and who their parents loved most. Though, at the end of the day, they were best friends who couldn't sleep at night without goodnight hugs. He wouldn't have it any other way, and neither would Erica. This was the family they'd both been deprived of, and being able to offer their children everything they'd missed was his new mission in life. He'd spend the rest of his day's making sure these kids never stopped feeling safe, never let those smiles fade. "If you keep fighting, it's going to get cold."
"Oldest to youngest," Nicholas told Noah firmly, sliding Noah's card under his before doing the same with Bella's.
Noah stuck his tongue out at his brother but made no attempt to change the order.
"What do you think? Are we ready to go surprise mommy?" David asked, having brought the plate over to arrange it on the tray.
"It looks good, daddy." Nicholas nodded with a smile.
"I likes it," Noah added with his own bright smile and happy nod.
"Alright, lets go," He told them tipping his head toward the doorway.
He watched them take off, their feet flying against the titled floor. Nicholas pushed Noah as they reached the bottom of the stairs, wanting to the first to reach the bedroom doors. Noah squealed with frustration and pushed back, both laughing as they pushed and shoved their way up the stairs.
"Quiet," David called after them, shaking his head as they their laughter floated through the otherwise silent house. Five years ago he'd have never pictured them here, as family. He thought himself to be the luckiest man in the world when Erica had agreed to be his wife, so one child, let alone three seemed like gifts he didn't deserve.
He shook his head, laughing lightly at the sound of the boys excited whispers from the top of the stairs. They were arguing about who would go first, and what they would say to wake up their mommy. "Why don't we all go in together?" He called up to them, scooping the tray up from the table before heading for the stairs.
They were balls of excitement by the time he joined them at the top of the stairs, bouncing and jumping as they babbled about who's card Erica was going to like most.
"If you don't keep it down, you're going to spoil the surprise," David told him, shaking his head, stopping on the last step.
"Lets go, daddy," Nicholas said excitedly.
"Now, now," Noah chorused, bouncing on his head as he nodded happily.
"Alright, if you think it's time," David teased, offering them a knowing smile and a wink.
"It is, it is," Nicholas nodded, "Come on," He motioned to his brother already moving to the door at the end of the hall.
" 'mon daddy," Noah babbled over his shoulder as he followed his brother down the hallway, "It time for mommy's special day."
