Chapter 4
He let out loud, angst filled groan as he flung himself up, and into a sitting position, the sheets that had been around him sliding down his bare chest. He took in a few breaths, trying to steady himself as he his eyes shot open, and he blinked into the darkness.
The room came into site a few seconds later. The purplish pink of the walls that surrounded him paled in the dark night, but still offered him the comfort of helping to gather his bearings.
He was alive.
How?
" David," He heard Erica's voice from next to him, low and drowsy from sleep, but there nonetheless.
" What's wrong?" She breathed with concern as she pushed herself up so that so that she was sitting next to him.
" Erica," He breathed back to her, his voice low and gravelly as he tried to shake the sleep away. " You're here."
She nodded slowly, as she blinked back at him, her big brown eyes doing their best to adjust to the light, "Of course I'm here." She nodded, as she slid a hand so that it rested on his bare thigh, " You're shaking."
He didn't reply as his eyes drifted around the room. The clock to the left of her read 3:35AM in the same bright green numbers it always had. The window that was next to it was pulled closed and shielded from the light of the neighborhood by the same purple curtains he complained to Erica about every morning. And she, he noted as his eyes came to rest of her, looked as gorgeous as she always did when she woke up. Her hair was down and curled slightly, barely tossed from sleep, but messy enough that she'd have complain if she saw it, her brown eyes wide and filled with love and concern as she looked back at him and her perfect body was clad in nothing but his Stanford sweatshirt. " You were with him, I…" He breathed softly, as he reached out slowly touch her face.
He fully expected her to be a mirage or some kind of image that greeted him at heavens door, but she wasn't. She was real. Alive. Skin burning under his fingertips.
She cocked her head and moved to push a stray lock of hair out of his eyes, " With who?" She asked, softly, "What's wrong? You seem somewhere else."
He caught sight of her ring finger, as she laid her palm against his cheek and he exhaled deeply. Her white gold, diamond incrusted ring gleaming up at him. He was here. She was here. She was his wife. They were both alive. " I'm fine." He nodded, trying to flash her a smile, despite the fact that his nerves were still on end. It was all so real, so natural, so…
" You're not fine, David." She told him, "You just woke up from a restful sleep with a painful groan." She continued, " You're shaking. You're breathing is rapid and shallow. And you're heart is racing," She added, touching fingertips on her right hand to his heart, " What's going on?"
" Bad dream," He answered, with a shrug. He didn't really want to get into this. He didn't want to tell her he'd become his father. He didn't want to tell anyone where the demons that still haunted him had lead him.
" I've only ever seen you like this when you have nightmares about your father." She noted, shaking her head, " Was this one about him too?" She wondered, watching his eyes go dark.
" Yes, no. I don't really remember." He lied.
" You said that I was with him," She reminded him, " Was I with your father?" She asked softly, hoping to coax the story out of him. He always slept well. Except for the nights leading up to the anniversary of his fathers death. Those nights, nights that mirrored tonight right down to the date, he was plagued by memories and images that left him pacing the house after waking up in a early morning in a cold sweat. She'd wake to find him downstairs, pacing the living room as he tired to shake the memories. He'd always end up confiding her, and they'd cry, laugh, yell at the world, and then fall asleep in each others arms. This didn't seem to be any different.
" No." He answered quickly, shaking his head as he ran a hand through his hair.
" Then who was I with?" She asked, curious now, " If the dream was about your father, and I was in it, but not with him, then you have to remember who I was with."
" Marrick." He spit out, the images of her with the bastard to still fresh in his mind for him to shake the anger of it all.
" Dimitri?" She said back to him, " How does he fit into a dream about your father?"
" You were having sex with him." He told her dryly, shaking his head.
" I cheated on you with Dimitri," She breathed nodding, " What kind of nightmare did you have?" She asked, a slight smile teasing at her lips.
He let out a soft laugh despite himself and shook his head, " A dark twisted one."
" Obviously," She said, nodding as she moved closer to him. She took his hand in hers and let hers, and cast him a soothing smile, " You always feel better if you tell me about it."
" Not this time." He told her firmly.
" Yes this time." She nodded, " What could be so bad that you couldn't tell me?" She asked, " I know your demons David, and they don't scare me."
" They scare me." He admitted softly. " I became him, Erica." He breathed, shaking his head, " I was everything I always swore I wouldn't be."
" You're not your father, David." She told him, firmly.
" Not now," He replied, "But I didn't start out like him in the dream either." He continued, " You cheated and it was like the rest of the world didn't matter. My career was worthless. It was all hopeless without you."
" Well, while that might be true for some men," She started with a soft laugh and a warm smile, " it's not for you." She told him, " You were strong, successful and the worlds most brilliant cardiologist before me, and if one day our marriage were to end, you'd still be all of things without me." She told him pointedly.
He offered her a soft smile and nodded, " Rationally I know that," He told her, " I did in my nightmare too. But that didn't stop me from putting a gun to my head."
" Like your father," She breathed, her voice cracking softly at the realization.
" What if that's the sum of who I am?" He asked, " My father was a strong, decent man. Who had a life outside of Vanessa. But when she left him, he forsaked all of that, his own son included and ended it all."
" Do you love me?" She asked already knowing the answer.
" With all of my heart." He told her, nodding.
" And if I left you tomorrow," She started, " You'd still love me then." She half said, half asked and nodded. " And you'd still love me the next day. And maybe for the rest of you life. But you'd keep going, David. If for no other reason then prove me wrong."
He tossed her a smile at that and nodded ," Well, you would be wrong."
" And you'd never let me forget it. Or forget what an amazing man you are. What I'd given up." She told him, " You're to strong willed and stubborn to ever let anyone, male or female stop you from being the man you were born to be."
" You're pretty good at this," He told her, a full smile creeping across his lips.
She nodded, "Yes I am." She told him, " And you're not your father. You're a good man, David, with or without me."
He nodded, " Mmm, but I prefer life with you."
" I prefer life with me too." She beamed back at him, " The more I think about this dream of yours the more I think I'm offended."
He cocked his head this time, raising an questioning eyebrow at her, " Because I didn't tell you right away…" He started, but she shook her head.
" Because you had me with Dimitri." She said with a shudder, " Really David, the idea of cheating on you with Dimitri Marrick should have been a clue that it was just a nightmare."
" I'm sorry, I'll make sure to pick a more suitable lover for you in my next nightmare." He laughed, shaking his head as he squeezed their joined hands and pulled her towards him, " How about Jack?"
" Leaving you for Jackson," She said back to him, " Now that would be my nightmare."
He laughed out loud at that, and pulled her closer, drawing her warm body against him, so that the soft material that covered her chest brushed against his, " I'll have to make a note of that, remember to give you some young stud as your lover next time."
She nodded, eyes fixed with his as she slid her hands up his bare chest and over his neck, so that her fingers could play at the edge of his hair, " I'd rather have you." She breathed, watching his eyes flash as his arms went around her waist.
" Because you like being mine." He breathed, tugging her against him so that she crashed against his body.
" Yes," She let out in half gasp, half breath as his lips moved in towards her.
" I like you being mine, too." He half said half grabbled as he crushed her lips against his.
