A bit of a different spin on this one. You'll see what I mean. Hope you like it. I think I got my groove back with this fic. Hehe.
This is set in late 1998 early 1999.
Chapter 1
" I don't have time for this," Erica Kane said into her cell phone, " I'm going to be late for my meeting," She continued, shifting so that she could prop the cell phone between her cheek and her shoulder, and balanced her purse against her raised knee while she attempted to lock the door of her hotel room, " I can't do this again." She said into the phone again, " I'll be home tomorrow morning and we can talk then." She continued, shifting quickly to keep her purse and the contents of it from falling to the floor. " I have to go now." She didn't give the man on the other end the chance to reply, instead she pulled the phone from between her shoulder and head and flipped it closed.
She blew out a frustrated sigh, clutched her purse, and whipped around, so that she was facing the elevators at the end of the hallway. She glanced at her watch, and shook her head, already five minute late. She sighed as she shifted her purse, intending to drop her cell inside so that she had no distractions as she headed to the meeting hall. Unfortunately even the best laid plans often failed.
Her cell phone fell for her hands, and despite her best attempt to keep it from doing so, her purse slipped between her fingers. The contents spilling at her feet. She breathed a shock gasp, and swayed on her feet.
" Whoa," A voice said from in front of her, his strong arms moving around her waist to keep her from falling as she stumbled backward.
She shifted her body and attempted to move from his arms, " I can manage." She hissed, shaking her head as she pulled out of his arm and stepped away from him.
He nodded, and flashed her a smile, " You're welcome." He said back to her, watching her blow out a frustrated breath.
" I wasn't thanking you." She hissed , shaking her head at him, " Preventing me from falling was the least you could do, considering."
" Excuse me?" He asked narrowing his eyes at her.
" You bumped into me," She told him, " Trying to catch me before I fell was the least you could do."
" I bumped into you?" He asked with a dry laugh, shaking his head, as he folded his arms across his chest.
" Yes," She breathed , nodding, " And now stopping to gather the items you caused me to drop is going to make me even later to my meeting."
" Which I suppose is my fault too?" He asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
" Yes," She shot at him, less then amused, " Now if you'll excuse me, I have far more important matters to see too." She shook her head as she leaned forward and bent down to pick up the contents of her purse.
" Since I did bump into you," He told her, his voice dripping with sarcasm, " I should really help you pick up."
She scoffed, " Don't bother." She was already kneeling down picking up and tossing things into her purse. She threw the last few items into her back and stood up, throwing her purse over her shoulder.
He cocked his head and narrowed his eyes at her, " I would have helped."
" You've done enough." She spit at him, shaking her head as she moved to start past him.
" You really should shake off whatever problems you're having at him that have you hating men so much," He said to her, her
back to him as he talked, "It's not all that becoming and I have a feeling that the men you're meeting won't think it either."
She stopped long enough to look over her shoulder, " You wish you could be as successful as me." She threw at him, before she whipped her head back around.
" No, I don't think I could carry around an ego as big as yours." He tossed back at her, smirking at her profile as she stopped
in front of the elevator.
Bastard, she breathed under her breath, refusing to dignify him with a response, instead she tossed him a glare over her shoulder.
He nodded back to her, watching her toss her at him as the elevator doors opened. Funny he was suddenly looking forward to the call that he
had to go downstairs to wait for. He just wondered if he should leave her be or ride down on the same elevator with her.
