As always, Alli's fic. I'm just her loyal bitch.
There will
be smut in this at some point, but I'll set the rating when it gets there. For now, it's clean. LOL
Chapter 1
" Eating alone, darling?" Vanessa Courtlandt asked, a smug smile playing on her lips as she looked down at table where her son sat alone at in the Valley Inn dining room.
David sighed, and shook his head, " Go away, Vanessa."
" Where's Erica?" She continued undaunted by the dryness in his voice.
" What part of go away don't you understand?" He hissed this time, shifting his eyes up to hers. He tensed a bit at the mention of Erica. There weren't many buttons that Vanessa could push that would get a rise out of him, Erica being the biggest.
" There's no reason to be rude, David." She started, her tone filled with the same smugness that mirrored in her smile. " I am your mother. I worry."
He let out a half laugh half scoff, as he reached for his half empty glass of scotch. " Thanks for the laugh."
" You really should take all of this seriously, David." She continued, " You're dining alone before the marriage even happens. That doesn't speak to longevity."
" Erica is meeting with investors." He told her dryly, that was more explanation then she deserved or needed, but if it would get her to shut up and leave him alone, then he'd play along.
" That's what she told you?" Vanessa asked, cocking her head at him, " I would have thought that she'd have a better cover for her infidelities. What with all her practice."
He shook his head and looked at her, unwilling to play this game with her, " Careful Vanessa, you're jealous streak is showing." He spit out dryly, watching a spark of anger flick in her eyes, " Erica is ten times the woman you'll ever be, and nothing you can say is going to change how I feel about her." He concluded, raising the glass to his lips.
" While that's very touching," She said almost choking on the words, " it really does break my heart to see her playing you for such a fool, David."
" If you have something to say, say it. Or go away." He told her, after the burn of the scotch in his throat had subsided.
She shrugged, " I've never known you to be so trusting. It's such a shame…." She trailed off, watching him tense slightly. She let a wicked smile play on her lips, as she studied his face.
" Sounds like you have some kind of specific accusation to level against Erica." He told her his tone still cool and clam.
She shrugged again, more flippantly this time, enjoying this far more then she should. " She's your fiancée, David. If you say you can trust her, then you why shouldn't you?" She finished, flashing him a knowing smile. " If it were me," She started again, watching him shake his head, " I'd want to know that my fiancée was cheating on me… before the wedding."
" Oh," He spit out with complete disgust as he moved to get up form his chair, " go to hell, Vanessa."
She laughed dryly, though they both heard the sound of victory echoing through it, " Don't say I didn't warn you.:"
He shook his head, " If you weren't such a lonely, vindictive, jealous old woman, I might feel sorry for you and your pathetic need to make other people look as bad you."
Her smile faded and she shook her head, " I'm just the messenger, dear. It's not my fault I walked downstairs at the exact moment that Erica and Jackson were leaving the lobby."
He rolled his eyes in her direction and tossed the money he'd taken out of his pocket, down on the table. " You're little fantasy world isn't nearly as amusing as you think it is."
" Suit yourself, David." She said, watching him push in his chair now as he ready to walk past her, " But, you really
shouldn't be surprised to find Jackson with Erica when you return home."
He shook his head, not dignifying her with a response as he walked past her.
Vanessa smiled at the back of his head as he headed out of dinging room, obviously on his way home to debunk her claim. It was a shame that
this time, she was telling the truth.
