I needed this after the this week.
The Little Things
This was what it was all about. Moments like this. The little things, that he would spend the rest of his life living for.
The sun hadn't been up more then an hour, but their was no doubt that it was going to be a hot Brazilian summer day.
They'd picked Rio because this was all about coming full circle. And they had. They'd shared their first kiss here, this was where it all began, the beginning of what was destined to be their happily ever after.
He was watching them from the back porch of their suite. They were laughing and playing, enjoying the early morning sun and waves. The water was crystal clear, and the sand was soft and golden, like silk under their feet. The air was crisp and clear, not a cloud in the sky...and he wouldn't have it any other way.
He shook his head smiling, watching nervously as Ashlee tackled the Brazilian waves. He wasn't sure how she'd done it, but she had Bianca out there with her, and had been giving her surfing lessons. Babe and Ben were laughing and playing, as they ran along the waters edge.
" You're up early." Erica said, suddenly at his side.
" Hey." He smiled, taking one of her hands, and pulling her to him. " I am, and it's all your sons fault." He laughed, " No sooner did the sun rise, so did Ben."
Erica nodded, smiling as David wrapped his arms around her waist, she laid her back against his chest, and sighed happily. " He loves it here."
" What's not to love?" He asked, dropping a tender kiss on the top of her head.
" David..." She asked, watching stunned as Ashlee rode a wave to shore, " Where did she learn to do that?"
He shook his head, trying not to watch, that kid never failed to make him nervous. " You forget that Ashlee was born and raised in California. We were at the beach one day, and she asked these surfers if they would teach her how to surf."
" How old was she?" Erica asked, enjoying this glimpse into David and Ashlee's past.
" Ten I think...maybe eleven. She flashed them that smile of hers, and the next thing I knew they were giving her surfing lessons." He laughed, smiling as the memory flashed before him. " Twenty minutes later, she was out surfing the boys who taught her. Kid was a natural. I bought her a surf board a few days later, and I haven't been able to get her out of the water since."
She nodded, " She's going to break her neck." She laughed, only half joking.
" Oh, I'm sure she'll break something. She wouldn't be Ashlee if she didn't show up at our wedding with her arm in a cast, or on crutches." He teased.
" Hey..." She laughed, playfully elbowing him in the stomach, " Don't even think it."
He laughed again, pulling her closer, " I'm only half joking Erica, that girl would be at our wedding if she had to be wheeled up the aisle."
" This is as much her dream as it is ours." She said dreamily.
He just held her, knowing that no words were needed.
Erica broke the silence a few seconds later, " She's quite popular." She teased, pointing to the group of young men surrounding Ashlee and Bianca.
" I'm more worried about those boys then I am the waves." David told her.
She smiled to herself, enjoying the protectiveness in his voice. He only got that tone when the kids were involved. She knew he was an amazing father the day she'd met Ashlee, but it wasn't until they found Ben that she realized how seriously and how well he took to his role as "daddy".
" She's a good kid, David, don't worry."
" It's the boys I'm worried about."
" Don't be. She's not interested in any of them. She has someone waiting for her back home." Erica explained, smiling as Ben ran towards them.
" Who?" He asked, completely caught off guard.
Erica laughed, and stepped out of his arms. She grinned mischievously as she turned to face him, " John McBain."
She watched him for a few seconds, laughing silently as he tried to remember where he heard that name.
" McBain...McBain...that long haired Detective from Llanveiw?" He asked, in disbelief.
She simply nodded, " Why do you think that she's always so quick to take volunteer to take Ben to Llanview to visit Kevin and Kelly?"
" Isn't he a little old for her?" Was all he could manage to get out, the thought of his little girl dating was still something he couldn't get a handle on.
" Don't you even, play the age card, David." She told him, with a smile, as she pointed a finger at him.
He shook his head, knowing exactly what she was getting at, " It's not the same, Erica."
" Really, how is it any different?" She asked, tilting her head to one side, her hands on her hips, a slight smile playing on her lips.
" We were a lot older, Erica. We'd experienced life. The age difference simple doesn't matter, because it doesn't have too."
" David, Ashlee is hardly a child. She's almost 21 years old. She's bright, beautiful, and without a doubt mature enough to handle a relationship with any man...older or younger."
He nodded, sighing in agreement, " I'm glad she has you. I just have trouble seeing her as a grown woman..."
" And not as your little girl." She smiled and stepped back into his arms, wrapping her arms around him. " You're not supposed to, David. You're her dad, she's your little girl...it's always supposed to be that way. But, you have to let her grow up. You did amazing with her David. She has a heart of gold, and she would move heaven and earth to make those she loves happy." Erica said, resting her head on his chest. " She believed the impossible David, and she believed it because you taught her to follow that prue heart of hers. David she found our son. She brought us our miracle. You don't have to worry about her."
He didn't say anything, instead just pulled her closer, " I'm going to worry about all of them, for the rest of their lives." He told her with a laugh, with a soft kiss on the top of her head, " But that's why you're here...to make sure I don't protect them to much."
" Oh, that's why I'm here?" She asked looking up at him, trying for anger, but failing miserably.
" Definitely, that and the fact that you're the mother of my son. It's good to have you around." He teased, with a wink.
" You are the most..." She started, but he cut her off with a kiss. He pulled her closer, but kept the kiss soft, and sweet. Letting his lips tell her just how much he loved her.
" Ewwww..." Ben laughed from behind them, spoiling the moment.
They pulled apart slowly, smiling at each other, as they turned to face their little miracle. " Good morning, baby."
" Hi mommy." He said with a bright smile.
Erica shook her head, laughing at the sight of him. It was 8am and he was shirtless and in his blue swim trunks. His brown hair was soaking wet, and falling all over his head. He was a total mess, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
" You having fun?" David asked.
Ben nodded, " I want to make a sandcastle mommy, can we?" He asked happily, flashing them a smile that he knew they couldn't resist.
David and Erica exchanged a quick glance, before nodding to Ben. " Alright, lets go make a sandcastle." David told him, leaning down, to tickle Ben into fits of laughter.
This was what it was all about, Erica mused, watching her two favorite men. This was how it was supposed to be. The little moments, the family...moments filled with love and laughter. And of course a wedding the next day.
" Come on, Mommy." Ben yelled, from over David's shoulder, his Daddy was giving him a piggy back ride, both of them smiling at her.
The little things...life was all about the little things!
