Part II

Erica blinked a few times, her eyes opening slowly as she tried to focus on the room around her. She slammed them shut almost as soon as she’d opened them. She wanted this to be a nightmare. She wanted to wake up, back at home, safe and warm in David’s arms. This couldn’t be happening.

“ You need to eat.” Jonathon Kinder told her, as he brought a plate of food towards her.

She shook her head violently, refusing to look at him. “ I want to see her, Jonathon.” She breathed, angrily. “ I want to see my baby.”

“ Eat, Erica.” He told her, pushing the food towards her, “ You need your strength for our next trip.”

She opened her eyes, and turned her head, looking at him, her eyes meeting his, “ I won’t go anywhere with you, until you let me see my baby.” She told him, her voice firm and unwavering. She’d gone through nearly 5 hour labor earlier that morning, and had ultimately given birth to her baby with very little help from Jonathon, in the cabin he had them held up in for the past three days.

He’d sunk into her house three days prior, and was in her bedroom waiting for her when she went to her room to go to bed. She’d screamed, but the house was empty, and she was all alone. Left to his mercy. She didn’t remember much after that, only that he’d put a wet foul smelling rag over her face, and then she’d woken up here.

He left her in the only bed in the cabin, one arm chained, not handcuffed, to a post. Even if she could get free, he had locks on all the windows, which were boarded from the outside, and the doors which were locked about four times over. She figured if she was lucky enough to get out of the cabin, that they were in the middle of nowhere in the Pennsylvania mountains an that might be worse for her, then it was here.

It was a hard labor, and she’d almost passed out from the pain ,and the lack of help But she hadn’t. She’d stayed awake. She’d fought. And she’d done what she promised she would, brought her baby into the world. Alive and seemingly healthy. Though, he wouldn’t bring the baby close enough for her to make sure.

“ I already told you, “ He said, moving a lock of hair off her forehead, “ You needn’t worry yourself about that problem anymore. It will be taken care of.”

“ It’s a not a problem, Jonathon. She is my daughter, and I want to see her. Now.” She told him, not willing to back down.

He shook his head, more firmly this time, “ It’s nothing for you to concern yourself with Erica You eat, and I will take care of everything.” He told her, smiling at her.

His smile was pure evil and she could feel his delusions radiating from it. She wasn’t stupid. She knew what he wanted, and what his plans were for her. And those plans didn’t include her baby. “ If you hurt a hair on her head, Jonathon, so help me god….” She threatened.

“ Stop it.” He warned, “ Stop talking about this. Just enjoy your dinner, and let me worry about everything.”

“ Let me see her, Jonathon.” She demanded, “ Let me hold her.” She said again, her voice slightly more desperate now, “ I carried her inside of me. I gave birth to her. I deserve to hold her.”

“ We’re going to have a wonderful life together.” He told her, moving his hand to rest on her thigh, “ Perhaps even kids of our own.” He smiled again, and she shivered, feeling his evil vibes in her core, “ I’ve long pictured them. They’ll have your eyes and your smile, my hair color, and facial structure. They’ll be the most beautiful children ever. You’ll forget all about our problem, you’ll be so deliriously happy.”

“ You’re crazy.” She hissed, “ You’ve lost all touch with reality” She shot at him, “ I don’t love you. I don’t want you. And I will never let you near me.”

“ Well,” He said, moving his hand up her thigh, “ you don’t have a choice. Once the problem is taken care of, we’ll be able to start the next phase of our life.”

“ You sick son of a….” She stopped mid-sentence hearing the soft first cries of her baby from across the room.

He turned his head and looked toward the dresser where he’d laid the little girl, and shook his head.

“ She’s hungry.” Erica told him softly, “ She wants to be held . She needs to feel safe. She needs her mother.” She said looking deep into his eyes now, “ She needs me Jonathon, please.” She pleaded.

“ She’s fine.” He replied, not bothering to move.

“ She’s almost four hours old now. She needs to be feed.” Erica told him, again as she painfully fought back tears, “ Or at the very least she needs to know that she’s not alone.”

“ Stop talking about it.” He told her, his voice devoid of any emotion.

“ Then let me see her.” She said, “ Or if you won’t do that, bring her close enough so I can see her, or so that she can hear me. Don’t punish her, for my….” She paused, stopping to weigh her options, wondering if perhaps feeding his delusions could work to her benefit. “betraying you.”

He sucked in a breath at that, his face flashing with anger.

“ She didn’t’ betray you, I did.” She said softly, deciding that playing along, feeding his delusion, at least for now, might buy her a few minutes with her daughter. “ I think I should be the one who explains all of this to her. I think I need to be the one to tell her why, this is happening, “ She paused, the next few words burning in her throat, “ so that we can move on with our lives.”

He studied her face, searching her eyes, his face twisted and unreadable, “ You’re playing me, Erica.”

“ No.” She said shaking her head, “ I’m not. I’ll go with you, I’ll be whatever you want me to be.” She told him her voice firm, as she nodded.

“ You’re lying.” He said, looking deep into her eyes

“ No.” She breathed softly, “ No. I won’t fight you anymore. Just let me have five minutes with my baby. Please, let me tell her goodbye.”

His eyes shifted from hers, to the baby, who was starting to cry harder, “You’re just saying that so I’ll let you spend time with your baby.”

“ You’re going to take her from me regardless,” She told him, “ I may as well stop fighting you and hope that you’d grant me this one favor.” She said, “ I’ll be whatever you want, Jonathon, just let me have this time alone with my little girl. Please.”

He was silent and still for a few seconds before he finally nodded, “ Alright, fine. I need a few minutes to prepare the rest of our things for our trip. At least this way, I can have silence.” He told her, as he got up from the bed.

Erica watched with wide eyes, as he quickly went about chaining her leg to the bedpost at her feet. She didn’t question the moving, figuring that he was going to unchain her hand, so that she could hold her baby. He unchained her hand quickly, but said nothing.

He moved slowly towards the baby, and looked down at her. Erica couldn’t see his eyes, but she could feel the lack of emotion, the lack of feeling, the lack of anything remotely caring for her child, coming from him. She knew he wasn’t going to take her baby somewhere safe. She knew he wasn’t going to care who her baby ended up with, or even if her baby ended up with people. She knew he was probably going to leave her in the woods to die. She knew.

Jonathon stared at the baby, his expression cold. He moved slowly, and slid his arms under the blankets that he’d wrapped the baby in, and picked her up.

Erica held her breath as Jonathon walked towards her, her baby in his arms. She was grateful that he was at least supporting the baby’s head, because other then that, he carried the baby with no feeling, no sense of protection.

She gasped softly, as he bent to put the baby in her arms.

“ Five minutes.” He told her dryly, as he turned around and headed for the door.

She didn’t even hear him talk, or walk away, or close the bedroom door, her attention focused solely on the perfect little person in her arms.

The baby’s cries softened and as soon as she was in Erica’s arms. Her tear filled brown eyes did their best to focus on Erica.

Erica smiled down at her daughter, tears falling freely as she used her partially free hand to move the blanket from around her baby. She sobbed softly as she ran soft fingers over her tiny feet and toes, counting each one, burning their shape into her mind. She smiled softly, at the tiny fingers that her little girl wrapped around one of Erica’s. She was perfect. Ten fingers. Ten toes.

She had the most perfect little nose, and a tiny little mouth, that she could almost picture smiling an adorable toothless smile. Her breath caught in her throat, and her tears increased, as she realized she’d never get to see her baby smile. She sucked back that thought, determined to burn every inch of this precious little girl into her mind. She wouldn’t have a picture, so her memory would be all she had to keep her warm at night, all she would have to tell David of their perfect little girl. She sobbed harder, as her hand ran through the soft peach fuzz on top of the babies head. She laughed softly through her tears. She and David had made a bet on whether or not their child would have a full head of hair. She’d bet him a carton of Triple Chocolate Fudge that their child wouldn’t have hair, just soft peach fuzz. She breathed a soft sight, as she ran her fingers over the baby’s head and through the tiny wisp’s of hair. Their baby’s hair was no doubt darker then hers, but nowhere near as dark as her daddy’s. She had his nearly bronze complexion, too.

The baby fussed her lips starting to quiver as her cries increased. “ You have your daddy’s pout.” She smiled bouncing the baby softly, “ You’re hungry aren’t you, my love?” She said softly, knowing that newborns needed to eat long before her daughter had, and that her daughter didn’t stand half a chance of holding on until someone found her, if she wasn’t feed. “ You’ll have to forgive me sweetheart, Mommy hasn’t done this before, but you need to eat and I need to make sure that you have a fighting chance.” She said, moving the baby to a more comfortable position so she could feed her. “ We going to make it through this, my love.” She whispered softly, as the baby started to nurse softly. She wasn’t sure she was doing this right, or if this was going to do anything for her baby in the long run, but she had to everything in her power to try and ensure that her baby was alive when she was found, “ I don’t know how. But we will.” She vowed, running a soft finger over the baby’s cheek as she settled back against the pillows. She fell silent holding her little girl close as she nursed, taking in these few precious moments, savoring every touch and every breath her daughter took, vowing silently, if it meant moving heaven and earth, to get this little girl home safe, to her daddy and her sisters. If it cost her, her last breath, so be it
