This week in November 1999, David and Erica made their first appearance as a couple at Palmer and Vanessa's weeding reception.

Quote of the Week
DAVID: WITH ANYBODY.
BUT ESPECIALLY YOU.
YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO KNOW WHAT'S
GOING ON DEEP INSIDE YOU AND HOW
TO LET IT OUT -- WHETHER IT'S
THROUGH A SMILE OR A SMALL
GOLDEN HAND MIRROR.
ERICA:I'M SORRY.
I AM VERY IMPULSIVE,
THAT'S TRUE.
DAVID: NO, YOU ARE MORE
YOURSELF THAN ANYBODY I'VE EVER
KNOWN. AND, ERICA, IT'S NOT JUST
A CHILD WHO LOOKS FOR THAT.
A MAN LOOKS FOR THAT IN A WOMAN,
AND IT'S A LOT MORE IMPORTANT
THAN BEING PHYSICALLY BEAUTIFUL,
PERFECT.
ERICA: YOU'RE JUST SAYING
THAT BECAUSE MY LIFE COULD
CHANGE IN THE NEXT FEW HOURS.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IF,
AS A WOMAN, I'M JUST NOT
ATTRACTIVE?
DAVID: ERICA, YOU WILL ALWAYS
BE BEAUTIFUL.
LIGHT WILL ALWAYS SHINE
FROM THOSE EYES,
FROM DEEP WITHIN,
WARM AND INVITING,
LEADING MEN HOME.

Chapter 19
“David?” She asked softly, her voice almost a whisper.
He didn’t reply, he couldn’t find the words. They were sitting under a tree at the park, down by the lake. She’d asked him to meet her there after her appointment. He had the ultrasound picture in his hands, eyes fixed on it. “Hmmm?” He finally breathed, eyes still on the photo.
“You haven’t said anything in at least five minutes,” She told him, motioning to the picture, “What are you thinking?”
“It’s really hard to believe that we made a little person,” He finally pushed out, turning his eyes on her, a slight smile playing on his lips.
She nodded, “I’d been avoiding this whole thing for so long, and then there he or she was on the screen, and then there was this heartbeat.”
“I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel now,” He admitted it, and she nodded, “I feel like…”
“I already love this child,” She said, figuring that’s what he was going to say, “but I mean…”
“We can’t be parents,” He added, softly.
She nodded sadly, “I think the best thing we can do is start looking into our options. We can give this child a family and we can live our lives.”
“Adoption?” He breathed, “Give our child to someone else.”
“I picked up some pamphlet’s at the clinic,” She started, “There’s something called an open adoption,” She offered, “We get to choose the parents. After the baby is born we get to be a part of his or her life. We wouldn’t get to be the parents, but at least we would never have to wonder.”
He nodded, “I guess that’s probably for the best.”
“What other choice do we have?” She sighed, “I want to do right by this baby.”
He nodded, “Me too. I just…I mean, I don’t want him or her to grow up thinking that we didn’t want them.”
“Hopefully if we decide to go the open adoption route, we’ll have enough contact with him or her that they’ll be able to understand why we did the things we did.”
He nodded and she sighed, moving closer so she could lean her head on his shoulder, “I think we should keep this quiet for as long as possible.”
“Until you start to show,” He acknowledged, “At least we have time to figure things out before we have to deal with telling people.”
“You don’t have to stick around for this, David,” She told him, “I can handle it.”
“I know I’m a jerk,” He said and she laughed lightly, “but we’re in this together.”
“A pregnant fling will cramp your style,” She breathed softly.
“You’ve cramped my style since that day after rehearsal,” He pushed out through a shaky breath.
She smiled against his shoulder, before lifting her head up so their eyes could meet, “You don’t sound to upset by that.”
He shrugged, “I hated you that day. And I wasn’t crazy about you when we had sex that first time. But, I don’t know, somewhere between then and now, I’ve started to like having you around.”
“You’re such a romantic,” She replied, trying to sound serious, but the smile that teased at the edge of her lips gave her away.
“You know what I mean,” He told her, and she nodded. “You also know that I’d be willing to give us a chance…”
“I love Jack,” She pushed out, though she knew neither of them believed her any longer, “He and I have our future all planned out.”
“I know,” He breathed, shaking his head, “that doesn’t change the fact that it’s my child inside of you.”
“Jack can get past this,” She told him, trying to convince herself as much as him.
He nodded, blowing out a hard scoff, “If you say so.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” She asked, cocking her head and narrowing her eyes at him.
“You’d rather believe that Jack can get past the fact that not only did you betray him and every promise you ever made to him, but got pregnant with my baby, then admit…”
“Admit what?” She asked. She knew what he meant. What he wanted. She even knew that she wanted the same thing, but she couldn’t admit it, not until she knew he would too.
He shook his head, “We both know this is about more then sex, now.”
“We can’t be together, David,” She told him shaking her head.
“Because you love Jack,” He spit out.
“Because you don’t commit. You don’t do relationships. Because you’re a self proclaimed playboy. You may feel like there’s something in all of this right now but…”
Whatever she was going to finish with melted into his lips.
He’d never said it before, and he wouldn’t now. He couldn’t. He didn’t know how he was supposed to handle a real relationship, either. Everything she said was right. Every reason she had for not wanting to be anything more then fuck buddies was legitimate, but that didn’t mean he didn’t feel what he felt. He let his lips move against hers for a few moments, before he pulled away. He leaned back and opened his eyes, watching her blow out a hard breath before her eyes fluttered open. “Erica,” He started, “I want to go through this with you. I want to help and support you through this. I want us to…I want to see if maybe my playboy days are done. But I’m not going to if you’re going to push me away. If you’re going to use Jack and your desire to push a future relationship to keep me and us from happening, I can’t stand around and hope,” He told her honestly, before holding the sonogram photo out to her, “It’s your choice. All you have to do is say the word and I’ll be there,” He finished, handing the picture to her, before pushing himself up from the grass.
He held her gaze for a few seconds, offered her a soft smile and headed off.
She watched him go, the sonogram photo of their child in her hands. She wanted to believe him. Wanted to trust that he really did feel something other for her then just sex and passion, but she knew his history. His reputation. He might want to be here for her, for this baby now, but what would happen when he met another girl? When someone else ignited passion in him? She’d seen him go through girls like most people changed underwear, and as soon as the novelty of all this wore off, he’d leave her too.
It was for the best if she cut her losses. If she kept him at arms length. If she made herself stop loving him, then she could get herself through this. Get through this pregnancy. Give this baby up to a family who could give him or her everything, and hopefully fix her relationship with Jack.
Don't think I didn't like it, but Erica and her pining for ASS, still? Ugh, It's not like Ass can give her anything that David can't. In fact I'm sure that his heater is broke and that nothing can fix it! If she can't see that David changed because of her than she needs to go back to Ass and leave my baby David alone. And btw, that baby will NOT live with strangers

Chapter 20
“Wow,” Anna breathed, eyes locked on the sonogram picture Erica was showing her, “I can not believe this is inside of you.”
They were laying side on Erica’s bed, each propped up on an elbow as they faced each other. “It has a heartbeat. I didn’t realize it would.”
Anna nodded, “I think it’s a boy.”
“You can’t tell the sex yet,” She laughed, “Besides, I don’t think I want to know.”
“The adoptive parents will probably want to know,” Anna said, watching Erica’s eyes flutter at the mention of her child’s adoptive parents. “Open adoptions usually mean choosing the adoptive parents in the next few weeks or months and letting them have a part in the whole process.”
“I know, I read the pamphlets,” She sighed, “I hate this,” She breathed, rolling onto her back.
Anna nodded repeating the same move, “I know,” Anna sighed, ultrasound picture still in her hands, “but it’s for the best.”
“I know that too,” Erica breathed, “It’s hard not to fall in love with this child.”
“You wouldn’t be normal if you didn’t,” Anna told her, turning her head so they could face each other, “But shit, Erica, you’re seventeen, a Senior in high school and the father of your child is David Hayward.”
“I know,” She pushed out shaking her head, “I know that I can’t keep this baby.”
“What did David say to all of this?” Anna asked, watching Erica’s eyes flash at her words.
“He’s fine with me giving up the baby,” Erica told her dryly.
“You’re lying,” Anna shot back, “He might be okay with an open adoption, but that’s not all he said, is it?”
Erica blew out a hard breath and closed her eyes, “The only thing that matters is that he won’t contest an open adoption.”
“He loves you,” Anna told her, and Erica shook her head. “You can deny it all you want, but he said as much to me.”
Erica sighed, “It doesn’t matter, Anna. He might think that he feels something for me, but he doesn’t. As soon as the novelty of all of this wears off he’ll leave and never look back.” “I believe him,” Anna told her, “I think you do too. You’re just scared.”
“I love Jack,” She protested, “And I have to have faith that he can forgive me.”
“You cheated on him. You broke every promise you ever made to him. You got pregnant. He’s not going to forgive this.”
“He might,” Erica breathed, despite the fact she knew Anna was right.
“You’d rather wait and hope that Jack can forgive you, then give David a real chance?” Anna asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“You’re acting like you think David and I should be a couple and raise this baby,” Erica half said, half scoffed.
“I think you and David need to stop playing games and think all of this through,” Anna told her, “I know the best thing for everyone is to give up the baby and pretend that you and David share nothing other then sex. And I would never suggest otherwise. I just think that there’s still so much more to all of this then you two are willing to admit.”
Erica sighed in response, “Things are complicated enough, Anna. I just want to get through the rest of this year and on with my life.”
“Just don’t push David away to hard, because once he goes, I don’t think you’ll get him back.”
Erica nodded, and opened her mouth, ready to challenge Anna, when a wave of morning sickness hit. “Morning sickness,” Erica breathed, as she pushed up from bed and made a bee line for the bathroom.
Anna shook her head, eyes on the doorway, as Erica pulled the door shut. “Kid knows you’re lying too,” Anna laughed, sliding her eyes down to the picture, “Don’t you?” She said, shaking her head, “I think we have our work cut out for us,” She said to the picture, “but you won’t be here for another seven months, so there still plenty of time to get your parents to come to their senses.”
She’d never advocate David and Erica keeping this baby. She’d never try to tell them that adoption wasn’t best for everyone. She just wasn’t going to let them rush through all of this without at least confronting their feelings for each other. They couldn’t take all of this back, or make it got away, but at least they could give the baby up without regret. It was the least she could do for Erica, and as her best friend, her job was to stand by Erica through everything.
