“Oh, It’s definitely a boy,” Dr. Clader laughed as he looked over the image on the ultrasound monitor.

“Really?” Bianca asked through a smile, “You’re sure it’s my little brother?”

He nodded, offering Erica a smile, “ Of course I can’t be one hundred percent sure until we get the amnio results, but I do know a boy baby when I see him.”

She nodded, only half listening. Her eyes were locked on the screen. This wasn’t the first she’d seen her baby, of course, but it was the first time she was letting herself see him. This little person inside of her, was his own being. Some who would come into the world with his own personality. His own mind. His own spirit and his own heart. He was part of her. “Do you want me to tell him?” Bianca asked softly, her breath catching slightly as they passed by the door to David’s office on their way down the hall toward the exam room where Dr. Clader wanted to conduct the amnio.

She’d told Bianca two days earlier, wanting her daughter with her at the next appointment. Besides, she’d been nearing seventeen weeks and it was no longer easy to hide her expanding stomach.

Two days later and she was standing in her kitchen, trying to follow the list of instructions Dr. Clader had given her. He'd been kind enough to get her in the day after her test had come back positive. He promised her complete doctor patient confidently and had conducted her exam and ultrasound.

According to him, she was fifteen weeks into her pregnancy. Her baby was perfect, he'd told her. The right height and weight. And if is thirty years in obstetrics had taught him anything it was how to tell the sex of a baby, her baby he said was more then likely a boy. He'd pointed to the evidence on the monitor but she hadn't been able to see anything through her tears.

The ultrasound picture was on the counter, next to the glass of milk she was supposed to be drinking.
